FLC men take down Colorado Mines

Women fall to Orediggers

The Fort Lewis College men’s basketball won its final game of the calendar year on Saturday, hitting some big buckets down the stretch to defeat the Colorado School of Mines 86-78.

Brenden Boatwright grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a put back to give FLC its first lead of the second half, 67-66. Dunnell Stafford extended the lead with a 3-pointer and the Skyhawks stayed ahead the rest of the contest.

Mines closed to within three points of FLC, 79-76, with a pair of Ben Boone free throws with 1:43 left, but Riley Farris answered immediately by draining a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Stafford added an insurance bucket and then JacQuess Hobbs came up with a steal and assisted Farris to seal the victory.

Farris scored 26 points to lead Fort Lewis. Boatwright was physical in the paint and finished with 22 points. Stafford added 13 while Corey Seng and Hobbs both scored 7.

Boone led Mines with 24.

With the win, FLC improves to 8-4, 4-2 RMAC heading into the winter break. Mines slid to 4-5, 2-3.

FLC women fall to first-place Mines

The Fort Lewis women’s basketball team started strong against the RMAC-leading Orediggers on Saturday. The two teams were tied at 14-14 late in the first quarter. Mines, however, dominated the second quarter 27-10 to take a big lead into halftime, 52-28. The Skyhawks won the third quarter by a point, 15-14, but Mines finished the game strong to win the contest, 87-53.

Sydney Candelaria scored 20 points to lead the Skyhawks. Kelsey Sorenseon added 13 and Alyssa Adams chipped in six.

Megan Van de Graaf scored 20 lead to lead the Orediggers.

FLC slipped to 2-10, 1-5 with the loss while Mines improved to 10-1, 5-0.
