COVID-19 is impacting sports again, affecting athletes and causing games to be postponed or canceled.
In response, Durango High School is taking proactive action.
DHS recently announced it has adjusted its mask policy and now requests that athletes, coaches and officials wear masks during play and throughout the events.
For wrestlers, DHS requests athletes be masked as much as possible – removing them just prior to the start of their match and putting them back on after their matches conclude.
“It is a request – just seems like the logical step in trying to slow this wave that is hitting our community and the country,” said Ryan Knorr, DHS director of athletics and activities. “It's simply a proactive step we can take that helps our students and staff stay in-person and keep events and our activities rolling.”
The school didn’t make any other change or adjustment. Masked spectators, up to 750, are still allowed to attend events at DHS.
"(We’re) just trying to get through all of this day by day and stay in-person and take advantage of the opportunities we have to compete,“ Knorr said.
