History nearly lost

River guide retrieves obscure team hat
Libby Gobble of Durango and her beloved Colorado Gold hat, a relic of the now-extinct U.S. Football League.

Working as a river guide helps pay the bills, but it meant Durangoan Libby Gobble nearly paid a high price for it. While working this summer, she lost her rare Colorado Gold hat. The team played in Denver in the short-lived United States Football League that existed 30 years ago.

Fortunately, the aging relic avoided a watery grave. Jostled free by rapids but snagged by a piece of driftwood, Gobble spied it and had time to jump in the river to get her hat back.

"It was the only time all season I fell out of my boat!" she recalled last Sunday inside the Main Event Sports Bar and Grill in Durango.

That hat stumped most of the patrons watching the Sept. 3 Houston-Dallas NFL preseason game. During regular season play between 1983 and 1985, the Gold went 27-27 overall and made the USFL playoffs once in 1985.

In local football action, 2A Bayfield will host 5A Miyamura High School of Gallup tonight at 7 p.m. at Wolverine Country Stadium.

The Ignacio Bobcats hit the road to play 1A Paonia.
