Senior Isaac Ross tallied 11 first-half points to help the Bayfield steadily build up a 12-8 lead through one quarter and 25-14 through two against former 3A Intermountain League member Monte Vista Friday night, as the Wolverines prevailed 59-47 at home.
The Pirates, however, never went away in what became a very physical battle, rallying to as close as 35-30 during the third quarter before BHS junior Jackson Queen hit his second of three surprise three-pointers during the stanza.
Bayfield (3-6, 0-0 IML) would go into the fourth quarter leading 42-31, and though Monte Vista senior Colton Mellott sank two treys and senior Isaiah Garcia (who fouled out with 0:59 left in the game) one, Bayfield offset Monte's gains from the free-throw line, going 11-of-24 during the second half and 7-of-16 in the fourth quarter.
Pacing all players offensively was Pirate junior Memphis Garcia, who racked up 18 points. Mellott logged nine; and big junior Alejandro Felix, eight.
Ross finished with 16 points; and Queen, 11. Junior Lance Mazur booked eight points, while junior Caden Wood and freshman Lincoln Williams each contributed seven.
Monte Vista dropped to 2-6 overall, 0-0 2A Southern Peaks League.
Behind 10 Chevelle Garcia first-half points and six by reserve Zoriah Archuleta, the Monte Vista Lady Pirates stormed out to leads of 14-1 through eight regulation minutes and 32-7 through 16 minutes en route to running away with a 65-20 road win Friday over former 3A Intermountain League rival Bayfield.
Held without a field goal for more than 12 minutes beginning the contest, the Wolverines (0-9, 0-0 IML) got 12 points from senior Abby Tate and five from sophomore Michelle Kirk, but trailed Monte Vista (6-2, 0-0 2A Southern Peaks) 46-17 going into the final frame.
Garcia, a senior, finished with 21 points to pace all players, while senior Haley Bernal hit three threes and totaled 11 points. Senior Adelia Romero booked nine; and junior Syriah Bernal, eight. Sophomore Archuleta and junior Rose Rodriguez each finished with six points.
