The Bayfield boys basketball team was able to cut hosting Pagosa Springs’ second-quarter lead down from 22-8 to 26-20 when senior guard Isaac Ross rattled in a 3-pointer. Pirate freshman guard Colt Lewis’ buzzer-beating trey, however, rebuilt PSHS’ advantage to 31-21 at halftime – and definitely made a psychological impact Saturday on the visiting Wolverines.
And knowing BHS would have to do something to slow junior Kayson Shahan (12 first-half points) inside, head coach Wes Lewis immediately looked to senior post Breck Wilson, who responded with consecutive power moves to the hoop against Bayfield junior Jackson Queen to increase Pagosa’s lead to 39-26.
Shahan would chip in another five points – of what ended up being a game-high 20. Bayfield remained hopeful, thanks to 3-pointers by juniors Lance Mazur and Max Meyers, but the Pirates pushed the 3A Intermountain League action into its final frame leading 49-33 after a Logan Harper trey with 0:25 left in the third.
Queen sank a three with 6:16 left in regulation to bring BHS (3-7, 0-1 IML) back to 51-38 but, was the only Wolverine to score during the closing eight minutes, besides a late Mazur jumper, as Pagosa Springs prevailed 65-43.
Queen finished with two triples and 11 total points, while junior Caden Wood fought for 10. Ross hit two threes and totaled nine points, but none after intermission. Mazur and Meyers each logged five points, and freshman Lincoln Williams three before he fouled out with 3:58 left in the contest.
Lewis finished with 11 points for PSHS (7-4, 1-1), while junior Gunner Dozier contributed a scattered but effective nine. Wilson ended up with eight points and Harper seven as nine different Pirates scored in the victory. Pagosa also went a crippling 15-of-18 at the free-throw line; Bayfield went 6-of-11, though Wood was 4-of-6.
Ross had tallied a Bayfield-best 16 points the night before in a 59-47 home win over 2A Monte Vista, while Queen cashed three threes and totaled 11 points. Mazur booked eight points, Wood and Williams each registered seven, and both Meyers and junior Noah Chamblee scored five.
Bayfield was originally scheduled to host Pagosa Springs on Friday and play at Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday, but both games have been postponed. Pagosa Springs, meanwhile, will travel to Montezuma-Cortez on Friday.
