White Christmas across Colorado could cause travel issues

Expect snow all week

If you’re staying home in Colorado for the holidays, chances are you’ll be enjoying a white Christmas. If you’re traveling out of state on a flight, you should get ready for some issues at the airport.

“Unfortunately, it’s a holiday week, and there’s not going to be too many good travel days,” said Chris Cuoco, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

“There’s definitely a chance of a white Christmas everywhere in the state. Rarely do I get to say that around here where I am in Grand Junction.”

All this week, Colorado will see snowstorms on and off until the weather breaks Saturday, Cuoco said. The mountains should expect anywhere from 1 foot to upwards of 3 feet of additional snowpack, with lower valleys predicted to accumulate at least a couple inches.

In Durango, daytime temperatures will hover the mid-30s, and that will cause a mix of snow and rain throughout the week. At night, temperatures will dip to the lower 20s and teens, and snow will accumulate, and melt from the day will freeze.

Over the weekend, the storm system will have moved out of Colorado, but temperatures will fall below freezing during the day.
