Annual county fair underway in Durango

Larissa Gallegos of Ignacio works to keep her Suffolk cross sheep, Fred and Barney, from overheating Wednesday during the 90-degree temperatures in Durango. The coats actually help keep the sheep cool and prevents their skin from wrinkling when she shows them.
The La Plata County Fair is underway at the fairgrounds in downtown Durango, with local kids from 4-H and the Future Farmers of America culminating a year or more of work on their projects. Along with the animal projects, there are a variety of handcrafts, baked goods, canned jelly and pickles, and other work on display.
Popular events on tap this evening include the tug of war, talent contest and antique tractor pull.
Saturday is the 4-H dog show, demolition derby, 4-H barbecue and family dance.
A highlight on Sunday is the Catch-It Contest, where youth capture lambs, calves and pigs for next year's projects.
