Welcome back, Purgatory

I agree with Jody Gans (Letters, Herald, March 8) that Purgatory is ready for updating, especially Chair 8 and the offerings at Dante’s. I feel confident that the new owner will deliver.

A friend told me that when he skis on the Front Range, he is asked if Purgatory is still open. Folks just don’t relate to the DMR name. I volunteer as a Purgatory mountain-safety patroller. One day while loading onto Chair 3 at the end of the day, a young boy approached and asked me if I worked at the mountain. When I said “yes,” he asked, “Is this Purgatory?” When I again answered “yes,” he exclaimed, “Oh no, I’m at the wrong mountain. I’m supposed to be at Durango Mountain Resort.” He was expected to meet his parents at the base of Lift 1, so I skied him over there, chuckling along the way.

Welcome back, Purgatory, the “6’s” and whatever other hellish names we can revive and bring renewed life to. Purgatory is a great mountain!
