Bayfield cross country overcomes tough week in Gunnison

Goddard, Mazur again lead the way

A challenging week of practice didn’t hold the Bayfield High School cross country team back Saturday in Gunnison.

The Wolverines finished sixth as a girls team and seventh as a boys team at the Mountaineer/Cowboy Invitational.

Bridget Goddard again led the BHS girls in 21st, crossing the 5-kilometer finish line in 23 minutes, 5 seconds.

Lexa Fleming followed in 29th in 24:33, Rachel Cooper was 38th in 25:23, Amber Johnson took 43rd in 25:39, Sara Ruybal was 58th in 29:05, Brittany Birk took 59th in 29:06, Mylee Sanders finished 64th in 32:32 an Jade Sanders was 68th in 36:24.

Salida’s Taryn Ceglowski crossed the line first in 20:01.

On the boys side, Sloan Mazur finished 31st for BHS in 19:39, Brandon Stuever was 44th in 21:11, Bryan Gram took 51st in 21:32, Joey Sandrey was 53rd in 21:34, Jackson Sibley finished 66th in 23:56 and Daniel Jenkins was 67th in 24:17.

“I thought the kids did very well for having such a hard week of practice including a run up at Forest Lakes on Loop Road,” said BHS head coach Josh Walton in an email to The Durango Herald.

Taylor Stack of Salida won the boys individual race in 16:34.

BHS next will run Saturday in Pagosa Springs.
