Weathering at least some of the wicked weather emerging east of Wolf Creek Pass Friday, the Bayfield Lady Wolverines soccer team scored a much-needed 3A Southwestern League victory as they traveled to Pagosa Springs and prevailed 1-0.
“After a two-loss slide, it’s good to have that bounce-back,” said head coach Chris Zoltowski. “And technically, I think this was their most proficient game this season – even in the weather.”
Back in the lineup after serving a one-match suspension for a red card received after the conclusion of BHS’ 1-0 home loss April 15 to Montezuma-Cortez, sophomore Preslie Wagner scored the only goal inside Golden Peaks Stadium, giving the guests a halftime advantage, which then endured until all 80 regulation minutes had expired.
Senior Emaliah Sawyer and freshman Sydney Rey were also credited with multiple shots on goal, but the Lady Pirates (4-5, 0-4 3A SWL) refused to sink with senior Trista Tully (11 saves, unofficially) once again sterling in net.
“She had so many key saves,” Zoltowski said. “She is phenomenal, that girl.”
Senior Annie Fusco was credited with one save in notching a shutout win for Bayfield (6-4, 2-3).
The Lady Wolverines also were scheduled to host 3A Tri-Peaks Leaguers Salida on Tuesday. Seeded eleventh in last season’s 16-team Class 3A State Tournament, the Lady Spartans entered Wolverine Country Stadium 5-3 overall and well rested since their 8-1 road rout of Colorado Springs St. Mary’s on April 18.
