Some La Plata County government services moving to new location in Durango

Building, planning departments will be relocating
La Plata County purchased the building at 211 Rock Point Drive in the Durango Tech Center to house the building and planning departments.

La Plata County building and planning departments will be closed to the public Dec. 18 through Dec. 21 as those offices make their move to the Durango Tech Center at 211 Rock Point Drive.

The county’s weed enforcement, code enforcement and emergency management offices, which are all part of the building department, and the planning offices will be moving to the new location from the basement of the La Plata County Courthouse on East Second Avenue.

Those offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Dec. 22. Some services may be limited from Monday through Jan. 4. Questions for the building or planning departments can be answered by calling 382-6250 and 382-6263, respectively.

Pointing to a lack of existing space for administrative personnel, the county purchased 7,200 square feet of space at Rock Point Drive for about $2 million earlier this year.

With the building and the planning departments out of the basement, the county will begin remodeling the courthouse for about $5.1 million for federal court services, which will be moving into the building. A $1.9 million state grant will go toward the remodel.

About $8 million was written into the 2016 county budget to potentially purchase a building at 10 Burnett Court to house the human services department, which includes foster care and adult protection services.
