Leading by five points with 3 minutes to play, the Bayfield Wolverines couldn’t hold off Buena Vista.
Tournament host Buena Vista got hot from 3-point land and stunned Bayfield in a 65-56 win Saturday. The BHS loss came on the heels of a 15-point loss to Peak to Peak the day before and dropped Bayfield’s record to 1-3.
“The hit timely 3s, and we fouled a bit too much in that stretch in the fourth quarter,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “We didn’t do what we needed to do when we needed to.”
Lehnus said his team showed more progress but sent Buena Vista to the foul line too many times. Buena Vista made 24-of-30 free throws.
Taed Heydinger led the Wolverines with 17 points, and Zane Phelps bounced back from a tough Friday game with 13 points.
BHS went 16-of-20 from the foul line.
The Wolverines will return home for their first home game Friday against San Juan High School from Blanding, Utah.
At the same tournament in Buena Vista, the Bayfield girls earned a win Saturday in a 46-36 game against Peak to Peak. The win came one day after the Wolverines’ girls (2-2) lost 41-31 to Buena Vista.
