Durango baseball falls hard on the road at Grand Junction

The tough season for the Durango High School baseball team continued Friday with another difficult loss to swallow.

The Grand Junction Tigers beat the Demons 18-0 in five innings, with Durango managing only one base hit in the game – a single by senior Casey Dunlap.

“It was not a good day,” DHS head coach Eric Baker said.

The Demons (6-12, 2-7 Southwestern League) were in a hole from the start, spotting the Tigers (12-6, 5-4 SWL) eight runs in the first inning.

“We walked four guys, hit a batter, made an error and gave up four hits, and they got eight runs,” Baker said. “Then we gave them another eight in the third inning and two in the fourth to finish it.”

Overall, the Demons walked seven batters in the game and plunked four more to pair with at least two errors, Baker said.

The Demons likely won’t make the regional tournament field this year after making the state tournament’s final four in each of the previous two seasons.

DHS will close its season at 10 a.m. Saturday at Montrose.

“We have to have a short memory; there’s no other choice,” Baker said. “I guess the only choice is we could come out flat again and get beat again, or we can shake it off and try to do something positive to end the season.”
