Ryan Phelps had a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds, but the Bayfield boys basketball team couldn’t get past Monticello, Utah, in a 56-47 road loss Saturday.
Taed Heydinger added 16 points for the Wolverines, who fell to 1-5 overall coming off a state football championship.
“It was a good effort and a one-point game going to the fourth quarter,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said in a voice message to The Durango Herald. “We just have to learn the hard way how to finish ball games against very good teams.”
Phelps was going against a 6-foot-7 player from Monticello, so Lehnus was thrilled with his 15 rebounds.
Freshman Keyon Prior added nine points in the loss. The Wolverines were without senior forward Zane Phelps in Saturday’s game as well as Friday’s home loss to San Juan of Blanding, Utah.
Bayfield will now take a break for the holidays before resuming play the first week of January.
“Much needed rest,” Lehnus said. “It’s been very difficult. The football guys came back flat and tired and are still trying to get in basketball shape, and we have a very challenging schedule this year, which is by design. We need to continue to grow and develop as a team.
“Even though we’re 1-5, I’m still pleased with several aspects. After we get some mental and physical rest, it will benefit us tremendously going into 2016.”
