One dead, one injured in crash

Collision closes Highway 550

One person is dead and another critically injured after a pickup collided with a motorcycle on U.S. Highway 550 on Sunday afternoon north of Durango.

Around 2:30 p.m., a southbound Toyota Tacoma driven by a 24-year-old female crossed the center line near mile-marker 35 and side-swiped a Harley-Davidson motorcycle carrying two people, Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Chad Martin said.

The male motorcycle driver was killed at the scene. The female passenger suffered critical injuries. She was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center then airlifted to Denver, he said.

The accident near Shalona Hill closed the highway for about two hours.

The motorcycle riders were from the Farmington area, Martin said. He did not release their identities Sunday. Both were wearing helmets. The driver of the pickup was not injured.
