Crime in Durango fell during December, according to statistics released Thursday by the city and the Durango Police Department. There was a consistent decrease compared to a year ago, with 61 total offenses committed compared to 86 in 2021, and decreases in nearly every category.
“We are still struggling with retail theft but our partnerships over the holiday shopping season did have a measurable impact and our strategies continue to evolve,” said Police Chief Bob Brammer. For December 2022 there were 46 larceny or theft offenses committed, versus 63 for December 2021.
Auto theft remains a high priority, Brammer said. “Colorado is the No. 1 state in the nation for auto theft. The great news is we had a 15% reduction in 2022 overall.”
The police department did more proactive work during the course of 2022 in regards to enforcement, said Tessa Reinhart, DPD’s crime analyst.
"Our citations increased quite a bit," she said. "About 40% from 2021 to 2022."
Traffic stops, including those for DUIs, increased 107% for the year. The final report for 2022 is expected to be available in March.
