Bayfield girls blast Lake County, 8-0

After a two-goal first half with a stronger six-goal output in the second, Bayfield’s Wolverines had little difficulty dealing short-handed 2A Lake County an 8-0 defeat Friday in nonleague action.

Sophomore Sydney Rey reportedly registered a hat trick to lead BHS (5-3 overall, 3-1 3A Southwestern) offensively, on a day when the squad saluted seniors Abria Thayer, Kody Rey, Haley Barrera, Kaydence Hunter and first-year player Gabriela Ibide.

Struggling recently to keep even a regulation 11 individuals in uniform, LCHS fell to 0-7 overall before a slated home match the next afternoon versus 3A KIPP Denver Collegiate (5-3). The Panthers’ 2A/3A Frontier League match in Leadville on Wednesday versus Denver-based 3A Arrupe Jesuit was postponed because of snow covering Lake County Community Park Field.

Bayfield, meanwhile, will next resume league work Tuesday at Pagosa Springs.

Ignacio ’Cats struggle away: Concluding a grueling three-match week, the Ignacio girls’ soccer traveled to Ridgway on Friday and fell 10-0 in 2A Intermountain-South League play.

Drained after a roller-coaster 7-6 overtime loss at PSHS on Tuesday, followed by a physical 4-0 home loss on Thursday to 3A SWL-leading Montezuma-Cortez, the Bobcats fell to 0-9 overall and 0-3 in league.

Scoring four goals before, and six after halftime, RHS – definitely energized by a 2-1 home win over area rival Telluride the previous afternoon – improved to 4-3-1, 3-1-0.

IHS will next host 3A Alamosa at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

In the aforementioned loss to Pagosa Springs, Ignacio got two goals apiece from senior Harmony Reynolds and junior Darlyn Mendoza-Lechuga. Seniors Faye Hackett and Laci Brunson each scored one goal in a clash which saw the ’Cats lose a 4-1 first-half advantage and the Pirates pull even before intermission.

The sides then swapped goal for goal during the second half, and PSHS sophomore Elizabeth Currier ended up with a match-high four goals. Junior Lauren Monterroso netted two and freshman Terriana Cage one.
