DHS boys, girls 3rd at track and field meet

Durango High School finished first in five girls events and three boys events, leading the Demons to third place in both divisions Saturday at the Piedra Vista Invitational in Farmington.

Farmington and Piedra Vista tied for first in the 11-team boys division with 88 points, followed by the Demons with 73. Bayfield was fifth at 53.

Piedra Vista also tied for first in the 10-team girls division, finishing with 116 points, along with Aztec. DHS was third at 67 and Bayfield again fifth, at 25.

Winning events for the DHS boys were David Moening, 800-meter run; Gordon Gianniny, 3,200 run; and Justin Marcum, pole vault.

Finishing first for the DHS girls were Shannon Maloney, 800; Sarah Smagacz, 3,200; Alli Davis, high jump and long jump; and the 4x400 relay team.

Gabe Kaufmann was the lone champion for Bayfield, winning the 100 and 400.

Bayfield is at the Farmington Invitational on Friday, with action beginning at 3 p.m., while Durango is at the Chandler Invitational in Chandler, Arizona, on Saturday.
