FLC student participating in Native American pageant

Gachupin

Fort Lewis College student Mariah Gachupin, a junior majoring in gender and women’s studies, will compete Saturday night in the Miss Native American USA pageant in Tempe, Ariz. Gachupin is from the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico.

The pageant encourages women to word toward their goals, build character and self-esteem and become powerful leaders – and to also celebrate Native American tradition and beauty.

The reigning Miss Native American is April Yazza, a 19-year-old from Durango and FLC student. She is from the Zuni Pueblo and Navajo tribe.
