COLORADO SPRINGS – For an underclassman-led squad, the Ignacio Bobcats performed at this past weekend’s Class 2A state cross country championships like they’d been there before.

With all six boys runners breaking the 20-minute mark, Ignacio carded a collective result that normally would have had the crew contending for a team title. But against 19 other top-flight teams in Colorado Springs, Ignacio found that its best still had to be better.

All told, Ignacio amassed 290 points and placed 17th, better than Buena Vista (310), Carbondale Colorado Rocky Mountain School (316) and Olathe (326).

Bobcats freshman Cayson Burcham placed 52nd out of 136 boys runners with a time of 18 minutes and 8.40 seconds. Ignacio sophomore James Martin (19:13.10) placed 95th overall.

Golden View Classical Academy won the boys team title with meet-best 42 points – less than half of Colorado Springs-based runner-up Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy’s 85 – after conquering the 5,000-meter Norris-Penrose Event Center course.

Colorado Springs Christian School junior Andrew Bel captured the individual title in the 2A boys race with a time of 16:16.60, while Lyons senior Sage Wynja (16:23.80) finished second overall.

Wiggins (88), Lyons (109) and Peyton (113) rounded out the top five in the team standings.
