On Wednesday, eight officers from the Durango Police Department searched for a man acting suspiciously near the La Plata County Humane Society.
Police originally responded to a report about 2:15 p.m. of a man behind a wall with a gun case near the High Bridge, said Sgt. Dave Peterson. When officers arrived, the man apparently fled.
“All we had at first was just a suspicious call,” said Lt. Ray Shupe, “so we didn’t know what we had. The gun range is just across the river there, so it might have been someone coming or going from there.”
Officers eventually found an air gun that shoots small plastic pellets and other items they discovered had been stolen from Walmart, Shupe said. Detectives are viewing a store video to see if they can identify the shoplifter.
Officers were on the scene for 30 to 45 minutes, he said.
No shots were fired.
According to a text from an employee at Mercury, which is located in the area, the business was placed under lockdown as the search continued, but Shupe said the Durango police had not requested a lockdown.
