Durango school district receives email threat

Law enforcement says the email was part of a hoax

Durango School District 9-R staff received an email that included a threat to all the district’s schools on Tuesday morning.

The email was sent from an address outside of the United States, the district said in an email Tuesday. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, it was delivered to multiple school districts and other agencies across the nation.

District spokeswoman Karla Sluis said Durango Police Department Sgt. Will Sweetwood responded immediately with a prompt sweep of the schools, quickly determining that the threat was not credible. Law enforcement did not recommend a lock down as a result. Students and staff continued the day as normal.

Law enforcement agencies have deemed the email a “swatting” incident, a term used to describe people making fraudulent phone calls to report serious crimes to emergency services.

Last February, the school district had also received phony threats armed subject at Durango High School, it was later discovered to be part of a series of fake calls that were made across the state.
