‘Fact check that? It’s common knowledge’

The Durango Herald has said it will not print a letter to the editor that is flat out wrong. It won’t print lies. Now, if only staff members would apply that same criteria to the rest of the paper.

The problem is people don’t even try to fact check things they know are true. The far right erroneously believes that President Biden and the rest of the Democrats stole the election from Donald Trump. Why fact check that? It’s common knowledge.

The far left erroneously believes you can buy fully automatic machine guns. Why fact check that? It’s common knowledge.

The Jan. 17 paper had an article headlined, “N.M. takes aim at multiple issues.” It says “a proposal from Democratic State Rep. Andrea Romero of Santa Fe would place new limitations on assault-style weapons aimed at reducing a shooter’s ability to fire off dozens of rounds a second.”

Morgan Lee from the Associated Press wrote that. Does the reporter believe it?

All legal firearms shoot one bullet each time you pull the trigger. Now, you can buy fully automatic machine guns but they are highly regulated, expensive and not used in mass shootings.

Firing “off dozens of rounds a second” is only possible with a fully automatic machine gun. And with rare exceptions, machine guns with firing rates like that are not handheld. They are mounted to aircraft or ships.

The M4 is the military’s fully automatic version of the AR-15. The M4 can shoot 12 to 16 rounds per second (still not dozens).
