The Durango girls tennis team had a beautiful day to compete on Thursday but unfortunately came up short against Delta 4-3 at Durango High School.

After the loss, the Demons fell to 1-3 on the season. Delta improved to 5-2 overall with the win.

“We were probably a little rusty in terms of competition because we haven't played a match for about four weeks now with some bad weather and spring break,” Durango girls tennis head coach Darren Tarshis said. “So that was tough but overall, I'm pleased with how a lot of the kids played. They definitely have been working hard at practice and are trying to take those skills and execute them during match play.”

In the number one singles match, Durango senior Adwyn Chowen defeated Cady Butler from Delta in two sets 6-0 and 6-2.

“She had an incredible season last year at number two singles,” Tarshis said about Chowen. “She went 10-0 and she's had this step up in this number one position. She's faced some really tough players. Today, she handled her business. I didn't even go walk over and talk to her during her match. She was well in control.”

In the number two singles match, Delta’s Lauren Angelo defeated Durango sophomore Jordan Kitchens in two sets 7-6 and 6-3.

The Demons got a win in the number three singles match when Durango senior Rachel Ager defeated Lillie Baier in two sets 6-3 and 6-1.

“Rachel played a really relaxed match,” Tarshis said. “She made really few errors, was really patient, played not too aggressively and played smart.”

Durango struggled more in doubles action. Tarshis credited Delta for its aggressive play and attacking the ball in the air throughout all four doubles matches.

Delta’s Rebecca Gonzalez and Chloe Sharpe defeated Durango junior Rose Hinds and senior Juliet DiGiacomo in number one doubles 7-5 and 6-1.

In number two doubles, Delta’s Emily Anderson and Perla Valdez beat Durango junior Molly Best and senior Ella Frihauf 6-4 and 6-2.

Durango finally had some success in number three doubles. Freshman Natalie Christensen and senior Isabel Bohachevsky defeated Delta’s Eh Law Kyaw and Jazlyn Naranjo 7-6 and 6-3.

Tarshis was proud of how Christensen and Bohachevsky complimented each other in their first match together.

Finally, in number four doubles, Durango senior Lauryn Christensen and junior McKenzie Hayden were defeated by Delta’s Lily Perez and Averie Verquer 7-6 and 6-4.

Durango girls tennis is back in action next Thursday at Pueblo West. Then on Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th, the girls will play in the Pueblo South Invitational.
