Bayfield preschool invites applications
Bayfield Early Education Programs will begin taking applications April 24 for the 2015-16 preschool year.
Children must be at least 3 years old and potty-trained to attend. Families may choose full- or half-day classroom attendance, an after-school program and a Friday enrichment class. The school is in session for nine months and follows the Bayfield School District calendar.
BEEP also offers 20 Colorado Preschool Program slots for children who are educationally at risk. Fifteen factors are considered such as prematurity, abuse in the family, learning disabilities, family income and more.
This program is available to qualifying 4-year-olds who are going on to kindergarten the next year. In addition to the CPP program, parents with moderate or low incomes may qualify for sliding-scale tuition, apply for scholarships or receive other forms of financial aid.

eSchool provides alternative learning
The Southwest Colorado eSchool is accepting enrollments from regional students for the 2015-16 school year.
Students can enroll for full-time study and earn an online diploma. Students also may consult with their current school counselor if they are interested in a blended-learning model involving face-to-face and online coursework, an option of this online school only.
The eSchool is a public online school serving secondary students in grades seven to 12. Enrollment is open to any student from the nine districts of southwestern Colorado spanning Dove Creek to Pagosa Springs.
The school is a service of the San Juan Board of Cooperative Education Services and is accredited by the Colorado Department of Education.

Durango School District 9-R will host preschool and kindergarten registration at these elementary schools:
From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Riverview.
From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Sunnyside.
From 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Fort Lewis Mesa.
From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 16 at Park.
From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 20 at Needham.
From 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 22 at Florida Mesa.
When registering, people should bring proof of address, birth certificate and a copy of their child’s immunization record.
Children must be 5 years old before Sept. 1 to be eligible to attend kindergarten.
District 9-R to recruit teachers at April fair
Durango School District 9-R will host a teacher recruitment fair from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Durango High School.
To be considered for an interview at the fair, applicants must be fully credentialed and highly qualified by August.

Online survey offers chance to comment
Durango School District 9-R is seeking community feedback about how well the district is doing.

Common Grounds Café will host an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the cafe inside Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
This is a student-run café.
Students get moving at Walk-n-Roll-a-Thon
The city of Durango’s multi-modal division will host a Walk-n-Roll-a-Thon from April 13 to April 17 at Needham Elementary School in conjunction with “Trees and Kids Are the Answer.” Throughout the week students will be encouraged to walk, bike, or carpool to school.
The week’s festivities will culminate from 1:30 to 3 p.m. April 17 in a Walk-n-Roll parade along Columbine Drive.
The Gray Matters Helmet Program at Mercy Regional Medical Center will be on-site giving bike safety demonstrations, and Carver Brewing Co. has donated root beer floats. Prizes are available to students who participate and are donated by Brown’s Sport Shoe, Maria’s Bookshop, Osprey Packs, the city of Durango and Mountain Bike Specialists.

Boys conference needs volunteers
Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to enter high school.
Boys will explore topics around advocacy, healthy relationships and positive self-image.
The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.

Escalante fundraiser targets ropes course
The Escalante Middle School Parent Organization is launching a T-shirt fundraising campaign.
The campaign will raise money to repair the school’s low-ropes course, while increasing ways to build school spirit.
Additionally, the organization is offering mini-grants for teachers to help pay for items not covered by the Durango School District 9-R budget.

iPad drive to benefit elementary schools
Louisa’s Electronics will accept iPad 1’s and iPad 2’s throughout April to benefit Durango School District 9-R elementary schools.
A live radio event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Louisa’s Electronics, 1125 South Camino del Rio.
Donated iPads will go directly to classrooms. Louisa’s staff members will be available to help restore the tablet’s default settings and ensure no personal data remains.
Donors will receive a donation receipt from the school district.

Native Americans schedule feast
The Durango School District 9-R Title VII Native American Education program will host an end-of-the-year potluck feast from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 15 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall, 2500 Main Ave.
Title VII will provide beef brisket, dessert and drinks. Participants are asked to bring mashed potatoes, vegetables, salads or frybread.
Utah State University Cultural Arts Performers will perform at 6 p.m. The event also will feature a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) activity table and a cupcake walk. People are invited to bring cupcakes or cakes for the walk.

Public library to give books to 4-year-olds
Durango Public Library will promote early reading by providing a free picture book to every 4-year-old in Durango from April 13 to April 27, as part of the statewide One Book 4 Colorado program.
One Book 4 Colorado aims to support family reading at home and instill a love of learning in children.
This year’s One Book 4 Colorado finalists are How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon? by Jane Yolen, Mouse Mess by Linnea Riley and Read to Your Bunny by Rosemary Wells. The winner will be announced April 13.
Families of 4-year-olds can stop by the library beginning April 13 to pick up a book in either English or Spanish. Books will be available during regular library hours.
