Residents evacuate safely

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to allow smoke and gases to escape during a fire in the Edgemont subdivision Tuesday afternoon, Durango Fire Protection Fire Chief Dan Noonan said. The residents likely will be displaced for a while, and a back portion of the home near the chimney will have to be rebuilt, Noonan said.

The fire was reported about 2:50 p.m. at 223 El Diente Drive in the 5200 block of Florida Road (County Road 240), Fire Marshal Karola Hanks said.

Residents were at home, but no one was injured in the fire, Fire Chief Dan Noonan said.
