Beginning Spanish course available

The Durango Education Center will offer “Beginning Spanish for Conversation” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 26 to Feb. 4.

The class will cover vocabulary relevant to everyday life and will give participants a foundation to begin speaking from the first lesson. The cost of the class is $110. Advanced registration is required.

Ignacio announces parent conferences

Ignacio School District will hold parent teacher conferences at these times:

From 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 at the elementary school.

From 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 24 for students with a last name beginning with A to L and from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 25 for students with a last name beginning with M to Z at the middle school.

From 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 25 and Feb. 26 at the high school.

Exchange program seeks host families

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking local host families for international high school boys and girls.

These students, 15 to 18 years of age, will attend high school for a year or for a semester.

Conversant in English, the students arrive from their home country shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year or semester.

Each student is fully insured, brings his or her personal spending money and expects to contribute to his or her share of household responsibilities, as well as be included is normal family activities and lifestyles.

ASSE screens and qualifies the students for the program. Families can choose their students from a variety of backgrounds, nationalities and personal interests.

Animas High School announces programs

Animas High School announces these programs:

AHS College Counselor Kim Coufal will offer FAFSA Night, which will provide assistance to seniors and their families in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid for grants, work-study money and college loans, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the AHS Commons.

There will be no school Monday, which will be a professional development day for AHS staff members.

The Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Feb. 3 at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave.

All seniors and their families should attend a graduation meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 10 in the AHS Commons. This meeting is mandatory for all seniors and their parents or guardians. The meeting will include information about graduation, including details about the schedule of events, invitations, gowns, photos, senior speeches and more.

AHS enrollment for incoming ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students for the 2015-16 school year is open through March 12. Information sessions will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.; from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.; and from 6 to 7 p.m. March 3 and March 12 at AHS. Methodist Thrift Shop offers scholarship

The Methodist Thrift Shop board has established a scholarship to help students advance their education.

Applicants are considered on church involvement, leadership, community service, extra-curricular activities and personal attributes.

Students can pick up an application at the Methodist Thrift Shop, 986 East Second Ave., or at high school counselors’ offices in January.

The application deadline is March 15.

Mountain Middle enrollment open

Mountain Middle School enrollment for incoming sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grades is open through 11:59 p.m. Feb. 28.

The lottery will be held March 4.

Dorothy Gore Scholarship available

The Dorothy Gore Scholarship, sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter CS, is available to any La Plata County graduating senior girl who displays academic promise, has leadership potential, serves her community and has at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average.

This $1,000 scholarship honors Dorothy Gore, a retired longtime Durango teacher.

All applicants to an academic college will be considered, although priority is given to applicants to Cottey College, a four-year women’s college in Nevada, Missouri, owned by the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

DHS cheerleaders to host cheer clinic

The Durango High School cheerleaders will host a cheer clinic for children ages 4 to 13 from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at DHS.

The cost is $30, which includes a T-shirt and snack.

Miller Middle to host fundraiser

Miller Middle School’s school-wide fundraiser, The Miller Angel Games, will be held Feb. 23 on the school’s football field.

Students will divide in teams representing different countries and compete in various relay and minute-to-win-it games.

Before the games, students will collect donations to help fund enrichments to curriculum and instruction.

This money will help provide new programs, technology and service- and action-oriented projects with a student focus.

The fundraising goal for 2014 is $15,000. There are visible corporate sponsorship opportunities available that carry through the year.

Nurse aide training program available

A seven-week Certified Nurse Aide Training program will begin Monday and run through March 17 at Southwest Colorado Community College’s West Campus in Mancos. The class will meet from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

The college also will hold another seven-week Certified Nurse Aide Training program at the college’s East Campus in Durango from March 31 to May 15. Students will meet from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday through Friday.

The classes are limited to 10 students each. Students must meet immunization requirements and pass a background check.

Durango to host community forum

Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger will lead a community forum to discuss standards, assessment and more from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Participants will learn the facts about assessment mandates required by law and how 9-R is working with teachers to implement the required bills as well as support teachers and students along the way.

Participants also will see how School Vault works and how it supports classrooms.

Volunteers sought for boys conference

Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to enter high school.

The boys will explore topics around healthy relationships, positive self-image and advocacy. Through interactive, engaging workshops, students will practice skills in these areas.

Volunteers are needed to help with the conference, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.

Florida Mesa to host coffee talk

Florida Mesa Elementary School invites parents and guardians to enjoy coffee and share ideas for working with their children at home in reading and math.

The school will host coffee talk from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. every Wednesday in the front lobby.

Riverview to host family movie night

The Riverview Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization will host a family movie night from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in the school gymnasium.

“The Lego Movie” will be shown. Riverview students and their families are invited.
