IS militants behead well-known scholar

DAMASCUS, Syria – Islamic State militants beheaded a leading Syrian antiquities scholar who spent most of his life looking after the ancient ruins of Palmyra, then hung his body from a pole in a main square of the historic town, Syrian activists and the scholar’s relatives said Wednesday.

The killing of 81-year-old Khaled al-Asaad was the latest atrocity perpetrated by the terror group, which has captured a third of both Syria and neighboring Iraq and declared a self-styled “caliphate” on the territory it controls.

Since IS overran Palmyra in May, there have been fears the extremists would demolish the 2,000-year-old Roman-era city.

Ex-Subway pitchman’s wife files for divorce

INDIANAPOLIS – The wife of former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle filed for divorce on Wednesday, saying she was shocked by the allegations that he engaged in sex acts with underage girls and traded in child pornography.

“Obviously, I am extremely shocked and disappointed by the recent developments involving Jared,” Katie Fogle said in a statement. “I am in the process of seeking a dissolution of the marriage. My focus is exclusively on the well-being of my children.”

Fogle has agreed to plead guilty to one count each of traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor and the distribution and receipt of child pornography.
