Haviland Lake repairs begin

Repairs to the outlet structure of the dam at Haviland Lake are scheduled to start the first week of May. The outlet structure, which regulates flow of water out of the reservoir, is decades old and will be replaced.

The work is expected to be completed by mid-July.

The Haviland Lake State Wildlife Area, 15 miles north of Durango, is owned by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and is a popular recreation spot for fishing and paddling. This summer, there is little water in the reservoir and the lake level will remain low through the summer. It will not fill significantly until next year’s spring runoff. Also, fish will not be stocked this year because of the low-water levels.

The U.S. Forest Service also operates a campground at the site, but it remains closed because of the pandemic. The Forest Service opened the road to the area on May 1. At the construction site, the road will be narrowed to one lane.
