FLC roundup: Women’s lacrosse loses final home game; softball finishes series strong

After a devastating overtime home loss to CSU Pueblo last Saturday, April 12, the Skyhawks women’s lacrosse team couldn’t pick up the pieces and were dominated in their final two home games.

The latest defeat was on senior day on Friday, with the Skyhawks losing to Westminster at home 14-4.

FLC finished its season under first-year head coach Ariannah Ritter 1-15 overall and 0-10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Westminster improved to 7-8 overall and 4-6 in the RMAC.

The Skyhawks lost their last 11 games of the season with their lone win against William Jewell College, 12-11, on March 12. FLC lost its 10 RMAC games by an average of 12.1 goals per game and its 15 losses this season were by an average of 12 goals per game.

Westminster and FLC were tied 1-1 after the first quarter. The Griffins then took a 5-3 lead into halftime. Westminster took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Skyhawks 6-1 in the third to lead 11-4 going into the fourth quarter.

The Griffins outshot the Skyhawks 35-23 and had a 28-15 advantage with shots on goal. Senior attack Phoebe Ramirez led the Skyhawks with two goals. Senior midfielder Diamond Velasco and freshman Jasmine Nguyen each had goals for FLC. Senior goalkeeper Caley Lay finished with 14 saves.

It is FLC women’s lacrosse’s worst season since 2009. The Skyhawks will lose Phoebe Ramirez (second in points), Diamond Velasco (fourth in points) and Lay in goal.

Softball goes 1-3 against Black Hills State in final home series

The FLC softball team struggled in its first three games of its series against Black Hills State, losing by an average of seven runs. But the Skyhawks bounced back with their final game on Friday to handle the Yellow Jackets 15-7 in FLC seniors’ final game on Aspen Field.

Black Hills State won 8-0 and 8-4 on Thursday before winning Friday’s first game 10-1. The Skyhawks fell to 10-34 overall and 9-30 in the RMAC after the series, while Black Hills State improved to 26-22 overall and 24-16 in the RMAC.

The Yellow Jackets began the series on Thursday with a 4-0 lead after two innings. Black Hills State then scored a run in the fifth and three runs in the seventh to cruise to victory.

Black Hills State outhit FLC 13-2. Freshman Chloe Padilla pitched all seven innings and finished with three strikeouts while allowing 13 hits and eight runs.

The second game on Thursday was a lot more competitive, with Black Hills State leading 4-1 after two innings. FLC came back with three runs to tie the game 4-4 heading into the sixth inning.

Four runs were scored in the seventh inning by the Yellow Jackets to pull away. Black Hills State’s Taylor Dowden hit a three-run homer.

Redshirt junior Hailie Mann pitched all seven innings for FLC and allowed 14 hits and eight runs while throwing two strikeouts.

Junior Alejandra Medina led FLC with two hits.

Despite only outhitting FLC 10-8, Black Hills State cruised to a 10-1 win to start Friday. The Yellow Jackets led 2-1 after two innings. Black Hills State then scored three runs in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the game early.

Freshman McKenna Timmons and junior Skyler Dietz led FLC with two hits each. Freshman Addison Gavigan pitched all five innings and allowed 10 hits, 10 runs, while throwing five strikeouts.

FLC finally put it together on offense on Friday afternoon, finishing with a season-high 21 hits to win 15-7.

The Skyhawks started with a 7-1 lead after two innings but Black Hills State responded with six runs in the third to tie the game at seven. FLC proceeded to score eight runs in the last three innings to run away with it.

Senior Faith Sgoro, senior Briana Jorgensen, freshman Alyssa Fockler, Medina and redshirt freshman Makenna Milliman each had three hits for FLC.

Padilla pitched 3.1 innings and finished with five strikeouts and allowed two hits. Mann pitched 2.2 innings and allowed 10 hits, seven runs and had two strikeouts.

FLC finishes its season on the road with a four-game series at Regis on Friday and Saturday. The first game on Friday starts at noon and the first game on Saturday starts at 11 a.m.

Track and field competes in Golden before RMAC Championships next weekend

The FLC men’s and women’s track and field teams got a chance to compete at the site of the RMAC Championships on Thursday at the Mines Midweek Meet in Golden.

Skyhawk sophomore sprinter Zachary Gaumont showed off his speed again, winning the men’s 100-meter race in 10.62 seconds.

Gaumont also finished tied second in the men’s 200 in 22.07. Skyhawk freshman Orlando Guevara tied Gaumont in the 200 at 22.07. He also finished fifth in the men’s 100 in 11.03.

FLC freshman Dante Solopaw finished second in the men’s 110 hurdles in 15.54.

In the men’s 5,000, FLC freshman Crewe Resendez finished fourth in 15:44.85. Skyhawk freshman Cooper Filmore finished fifth in the men’s 5,000 in 15:50.40.

Skyhawk junior Malakai Hanson finished fifth in the men’s 800 in 1:57.39.

On the FLC women’s team, freshman Addisyn Leeds finished second in the women’s 200 in 25.58. Freshman Janaya Mancell finished fifth in the women’s 200 in 26.73. Junior Althea Griffith finished fifth in the women’s 5,000 in 19:26.01.

The Skyhawks will compete in the RMAC Championships in Golden from next Friday to Sunday.
