Local First has long been a champion of supporting locally owned, independent businesses to strengthen the local economy. One of its signature initiatives, the Be Local Coupon Book, has been a cornerstone of its mission, offering discounts and deals to encourage consumers to shop locally for over 15 years. Now, in an exciting new collaboration with the AI Institute at Fort Lewis College, Local First is taking the next step in enhancing this vital resource.
The collaboration between Local First and the FLC AI Institute aims to streamline the Be Local Coupon Book’s production process and introduce a digital app, making the coupon book more accessible, user-friendly and effective for businesses and customers. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, this collaboration will address long-standing challenges such as manual workflows and digital engagement, which have historically hindered the growth and reach of the coupon book. This collaboration is also being strategic with its use of AI, understanding it is a nascent technology with strengths and weaknesses that must be considered. The prudent use of AI will be part of the learning journey that we hope to share with the community.
AI technology will be used to automate and track much of the coupon book’s production, reducing the time and effort required to compile, update and distribute the book each year. This will allow Local First to focus more on the strategic aspects of supporting local businesses and less on the logistic challenges associated with the book’s creation. Further, the integration of a digital app with the physical book will allow users to easily access coupons on their smartphones while also offering a convenient directory of Local First members.
This project will also offer educational opportunities for Local First members. Local businesses and nonprofits can learn from our experience how to apply AI tools to streamline their own operations, enhance customer engagement and improve overall business efficiency. This initiative is a step forward in helping local organizations understand the benefits of using AI to enhance their success in the digital age.
In addition to this project, the FLC AI Institute plays a broader role in keeping our community informed and engaged with AI advances. The Institute regularly offers public workshops on AI and is actively collaborating with other organizations on innovative projects across the region. As a hub for applied research and hands-on learning, the AI Institute is committed to using AI to solve real-world problems and benefit local communities.
“We created the AI Institute to help not just Fort Lewis College, but our whole region explore real-world uses of artificial intelligence,” said FLC Provost Mario Martinez. “This project with Local First is exactly the kind of partnership that builds skills, strengthens local businesses, and benefits the whole community.”
This collaboration between Local First and the FLC AI Institute will serve as a model for using innovative technology to support community-driven initiatives, foster economic growth and encourage consumers to shop locally.
