July 22, 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Outdoor Art Party. Let’s get messy with an outdoor art party on the library’s Riverside Patio. Create art pieces big and small with other kids in the community.
July 29, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Rocky Mountain Puppets in “Prism Break.” Meghan and her friends stumbled across a seemingly normal kaleidoscope, or so they thought. They soon realized that a single twist has the power to transport them to alternate dimensions. The excitement of this discovery quickly turned into desperation after the kaleidoscope shattered, trapping them in one of the dimensions. As they struggle to repair the broken prisms on the kaleidoscope, they must navigate the fractured reality they’re in to find their way back home.
July 11 and 25, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: LEGO Club. Build, create and play with the library’s LEGO collection.
July 18, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: Color Our World – with Chemistry. Combine science and art with this colorful experiment. Learn about acids and bases, and then use your knowledge to get creative and make your own color-changing art. Learn how to create homemade pH indicators. Then, with an array of household materials of different pH levels, see how the indicator changes colors depending on if there is a base or an acid. With these different colors, we’ll be able to make colorful art.
July 18, 6-8:30 p.m.: Teen Painting Party. Time to get artistic with the Teen After Hours Painting Party. Whether you are a beginner or a practiced artist, there will be fun to go around. Enjoy mocktails and soda with this paint and sip experience. Bring your friends and see how each of your unique artistic flares come through. For ages 13-17. Registration required.

July 1, 10-10:45 a.m.: Stories in the Park. Join Durango Parks and Recreation and Durango Public Library for a free, family friendly, outdoor storytime and nature journaling adventure. Recommended for ages 3-7 with a favorite adult. These programs will be held at Santa Rita Park picnic shelter at 111 South Camino del Rio. If the weather’s iffy, we might move indoors. In case of rain, snow, extreme cold/heat, etc., on the day of the event, call 375-3380 to see if we’ll be at our usual spot or inside at an alternate location.

July 2, 6-7:30 p.m.: When Lightning Strikes! Dr. Tiffany Brainerd, wilderness medicine doctor, will discuss potential risks of lightning injuries and ways to mitigate those risks. She will review current recommendations for how to respond if you are caught outside in a pending or active lightning storm. She will show examples of typical lightning injuries and describe what to do if you or a member of your group is the victim of a lightning strike.

July 7, 6-8 p.m.: Birds, Pollinators and Biodiversity: What we can do to help them thrive. Margaret Mayer, conservation lead for SW Colorado Sierra Club, will discuss the importance of birds, pollinators and biodiversity. Learn about what causes the of loss of biodiversity and how we can play a role in the preservation of local flora and fauna.

July 19, 1-3 p.m.: Silent Book Club. An hour of dedicated reading. Socialize after, or not. Bring your own book or grab something new off the shelf and read alongside other readers. There are no assigned readings. All book genres and formats are welcome.
July 21, 6- 7:30 p.m.: Living with Small Mammals and Birds. Learn about raccoons, foxes, bats, woodpeckers and more. What can you do when you encounter them around your home? Program is a part of the “Living with Wildlife” series presented by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
July 22, 4:30-6 p.m: Climate Café. A space to share thoughts and feelings about the climate crisis. Climate Cafés are not action oriented; they’re not about shifting the outcome or figuring out what to “do.” Rather, they’re an opportunity to build an ecosystem of community, to cultivate resilience and to continue to meet the future from a place of connection. A special poetry writing workshop on the topic of “Poetry as History.” Toland is a writer, song leader, naturalist and educator currently working toward her MFA in poetry at the Institute of American Indian Arts. Her writing has appeared in Southern Humanities Review, Camas, humana obscura, Four Corners Voices and West Trade Review, among others. Mountaintop Movement Fitness Classes

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-9 a.m. Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but use different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. Weather permitting, classes are held outside for the summer.
Yoga For All: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:15-10:15 a.m. In this informal, free meetup, we create awareness and harmony between the mind and body that allows us to remove stress and anxiety. We use our breath to move deeper into our body while warming, lengthening, and strengthening our muscles. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged.
Friends of the Library Shed Book Sale: Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m. Weather permitting, stop by the shed in the library parking lot for our weekly popup book sale.

July 14, 6-8 p.m.: Classic Movie Series with Dennis Taylor: “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” The fantastic story from Jules Verne of Captain Nemo and his incredible under water boat, The Nautilus, is brought to the screen. Lavishly filmed on location in Jamaica and the Bahamas with state-of-the-art underwater photography.
July 15, 5:30-6:30 p.m.: Colorful Craft Night: Resin Art. We have molds for everything including bookmarks, jewelry, succulents and flowers. This is a fairly quick craft to create, so feel free to drop by (outside, weather permitting) anytime between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. These crafts can get messy, so don’t wear your favorite T-shirt.

Karen Hwang’s love for flowers began soon after she arrived in Durango in 1997, and she has honed her skills in identifying plants over the years. In 2024, she published a book about over 400 species of plants along the Durango trails. She will share her love for plants and especially the native plants in our area. There are also rare and uncommon species as well as county records that you will get to see on her slide show. To buy her book, “Wildflowers of Durango Trails,” visit wildflowersofdurangotrails.com and purchase it, and she can deliver the book to you at the meeting.
