Teacher actions, district hiring practices deserve scrutiny

The arrest and federal indictment of former Escalante Middle School teacher Ben Smith – now facing 48 felony charges related to the enticement of minors and possession of child pornography – is one of the most disturbing and damaging events to occur in our schools in recent memory.

Yet, after the Herald’s initial report (Herald, Jul 25, 2024), there has been virtually no follow-up since October (Herald, Oct. 30, 2024). Why? This case involves alleged exploitation of over 30 local minors, a former teacher trusted by parents and students, and an ongoing federal investigation. What more serious issue could demand public scrutiny?

As a parent and community member, I am also deeply concerned about the district’s hiring and vetting practices. What policies are in place to screen applicants? Were CBI or FBI background checks performed? Were any warning signs overlooked in the hiring of Mr. Smith? And if not – why weren’t they detected?

The public deserves answers. Our students deserve protection. And our local paper should be leading the charge for transparency and accountability.

I urge The Durango Herald to continue reporting on this story and to press the district for clear answers. Trust in our schools – and in the institutions that report on them – depends on it.
