The La Plata County commissioners are seeking residents to serve on one of 17 boards and commissions with open seats.

The 38 groups, made up of over 200 volunteers, advise commissioners on topics ranging from public libraries to noxious weeds and rodents.

“It’s a wonderful way to engage and participate in your local government. These boards are all advisory to the Board of County Commissioners, and they listen,” said county spokesman Ted Holteen. “We would love to have more applications than we know what to do with.”

About 40 positions are open across the 17 boards and commissions with vacancies, the county estimates. Each board has its own requirements – some call for specialized experience, while others require only that applicants live within county boundaries, which is mandatory for all positions.

“These are volunteer positions, so it’s really based on residents’ interest and time availability, but we see them as very valuable,” Holteen said.

He emphasized the roles are nonpartisan, calling them “absolutely apolitical.”

Applications are due online by Oct. 17. Interviews will be conducted by sitting board members in the weeks following.
