To celebrate its nomination for the 2030 Union Cyclist World Mountain Bike Championships, the city of Durango is hosting the Ride with the Champions bicycle parade through downtown, followed by a screening of the GC Kuss documentary.

The parade, which will be held at 4:45 p.m. Friday will be led by local cycling legends 2023 Vuelta a España champ Sepp Kuss, National Champion Cooper Wells and Olympians Riley Amos and Todd Wells Jr. It will follow a route through the heart of Durango beginning at Buckley Park before proceeding down Main Avenue from 12th Street to Fifth Street, then climb up to East Second Avenue and loop back to Buckley.

City spokesperson Tom Sluis said streets along the route will be closed to cars, though parking on Main Avenue will be available during the event. Additionally, 12th Street in front of The Durango Herald offices will be closed during the GC Kuss screening after the parade. Sluis said there are plenty of alternate routes and places to park cars while the event is happening.

“The best parking option for people is to use the city’s main parking lot at 250 West 8th Street,” Sluis wrote in an email to the Herald. “As for alternate travel routes, Camino del Rio will still remain open for traffic, as will East Third Avenue.”

Sluis said he is looking forward to celebrating Durango’s cycling community, and for the chance to ride alongside some of the big names in the sport who call Durango home.

“The parade is a great opportunity for the community to come out and celebrate the fantastic mountain biking that defines Durango, and to ride along with some of the local cycling stars that helped put us on the map,” Sluis wrote. “Also, there’s going to be a beer tent in Buckley Park for anyone who watches the Sepp Kuss documentary afterward, so that should be pretty fun.”
