Protecting the character, integrity of old neighborhoods

There will be a Community Development Commission meeting as to whether to eliminate all lot size requirements for detached ADUs in the city on Monday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. in Council Chambers. Then, upon the Commission’s recommendation, it goes to City Council to be voted on.

Lots size requirements are what protect those of us living in the old, established neighborhoods from just anyone building anything, anywhere, invading our privacy and blocking our sun, our sky, our space. Council honored the differences and characters of each neighborhood by giving us different lot size requirements in the 2014 code changes. The other protection then was that the owner of the property would live on the property.

ADU rentals are not “affordable” with building costs, taxes and insurance, and city fees. They only add to our already-crumbling infrastructure, and more density to our very congested neighborhoods. And, there is no oversight for the existing units.

More and more people will come to Durango, it will not stop. Why cram in more and more people at the expense of long time residents who have lived and worked in this community for years?

So, if you don’t want more noise, traffic, parking, blocked sun and views, dogs, lights at night, trash, and people too close together, please either send an email (by Monday noon) to:

Jayme.Lopko@durangoco.gov and CityCouncil@DurangoCO.gov, and/or show up at the meeting.

See you there.
