As we wrap up another incredible 4-H year, I am inspired and so proud of the many experiences and successes our members have achieved. From local activities to international adventures, La Plata County 4-H youth have embraced every opportunity to learn, grow, and lead. This year was a true reflection of what 4-H is all about, helping young people develop the skills, confidence, and character they need to thrive.
We kicked off the year with six of our members traveling to Washington, D.C. for the National 4-H Conference, where they participated in workshops focused on agriculture, citizenship, S.T.E.M. and healthy living. They returned with not only new knowledge but also strengthened leadership skills and ideas for making an impact in their own communities.
Later in the year, four of our members embarked on a life-changing trip to Italy where they studied agriculture in Europe. Beyond learning about farming practices abroad, they also immersed themselves in Italian culture, practiced communicating in Italian, and experienced the value of global connection, all while enjoying some of the best food of their lives.
Closer to home, members attended the Colorado State Conference at Colorado State University, where they spent a week on campus experiencing “college life.” They learned directly from professors and educators, networked with other youth across the state, and explored potential career pathways in fields such as agriculture, science and leadership.
These opportunities are just a snapshot of the many ways 4-H prepares young people for the future. In addition to conferences and travel, members participate in hands-on projects ranging from livestock, cooking, and gardening to robotics, photography, and public speaking. Through these experiences, youth learn responsibility, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication. Preparing them with essential life skills that will serve them and their futures.
The successes of our members this year highlight the heart of 4-H: developing leaders who are resilient, adaptable, and ready to make a difference in the world. Whether traveling across the globe or presenting a project at the county fair, our youth consistently demonstrate curiosity, hard work, and dedication.
As we celebrate the accomplishments of the past year, we are also excited to look ahead. Registration for the new 4-H year opens on Oct. 1, and we invite all youth ages 5 to 18 to join us in the adventure of learning by doing. Whether you’re interested in animals, science, art, leadership, or community engagement, there is a place for you in 4-H.
By joining 4-H, you become a part of a supportive community that encourages growth, builds friendships, and provides opportunities that can shape your future. We encourage families to take advantage of the chance to give their children meaningful experiences that will benefit them for a lifetime.
La Plata County 4-H is so proud of all that our members have accomplished this year, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds. Together, we’ll continue to inspire new leaders and make the best better.
