At last week’s Durango Farmers Market – the last of the year – as adults perused the autumn selection of locally grown vegetables, children (and some grown-ups) wore costumes, went trick-or-treating and scampered about high on sugar.
In celebration of Halloween – celebrated by children and college students, and disavowed by some of the ultra-religious – The Durango Herald walked the farmers market to ask participants: What are you most scared of?
It turned out that ghouls and goblins don’t have the same fear factor as the current political climate and economic volatility – at least for some market-goers.
Here’s what residents had to say:
“Donald Trump.”
“Clowns.”
“I don’t know what I’m scared of (long pause) – the government failing.”
“How radical do I want to get? I would say I’m most scared of unhappy and uneducated people.”
“Getting priced out of Durango is my biggest fear at the moment.”
“Grocery bills.”
“Spiders. They’re just creepy and itchy and they have eight legs.”
“Probably zombies and spiders, when I think about them they scare me.”
“Spiders.”
“The dark, cause it has a moon that when it comes out there are zombies.”
“Meteors, like comets hitting the earth. That would just be an awful way to go out.”
“War – because its inevitable. It seems to have a huge economy around it.”
