The San Juan Mountains Association has launched a search for its next executive director as Stephanie Weber, who has led the organization for the past five years, prepares to take a step back.

“Leading SJMA has been the honor of a lifetime, but I have long believed that organizational success is bolstered by fresh leadership,” Weber wrote in a newsletter Friday announcing the transition. “As I wrap up my fifth year as executive director, I am ready to transfer leadership to a new creative and energetic person.”

SJMA’s board is now accepting applications for the position.

Weber will remain fully engaged in her role until a successor is hired, then shift to a part-time director of development position to help ensure a smooth transition and maintain the organization’s long-term fiscal health.

The organization hopes the leadership transition to be complete by May 2026.

SJMA operates across the San Juan Mountain region in Southwest Colorado, serving as an interpretive partner to multiple federal land management agencies. It also works with state and local governments, schools and the business community. The nonprofit focuses on education, visitor information and stewardship, supported by at least 20 year-round staff members, about 20 seasonal employees and hundreds of volunteers.

According to the announcement, the next executive director will be expected to bring strong leadership skills, strategic planning experience and a background in managing budgets of at least $1 million.
