Thanksgiving is coming up on Thursday, so it’s no surprise that the local sports schedule for the upcoming week is pretty light.

All local fall sports are done now that the Fort Lewis College women’s cross country team competed in the national championships, and the Durango High School football team lost in the 4A state playoffs.

Therefore, it’s a somewhat slow time for local sports. Except for Durango hockey, local high school winter sports won’t start until after Thanksgiving break. FLC’s two basketball teams will hit the road for some tough nonconference games on Friday and Saturday.

Here’s the local sports schedule for the upcoming week:

FLC sports:

Friday: Women’s basketball vs. Sul Ross State at noon in Maverick Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Junction

Notes: The Skyhawks women’s basketball team is off to a fantastic 4-0 start to the season, nearly equaling last season’s five wins against Division II teams.

FLC’s latest win was a thrilling 62-61 win at Angelo State on Saturday. Sophomore guard Katie Lamb hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds left to give FLC the lead; the Skyhawks were trailing by eight after three quarters.

Sul Ross State, out of the Lone Star Conference, is 1-1 overall with its latest game a 72-59 loss at Schreiner University on Friday.

Men’s basketball vs. Angelo State at 6:30 p.m. in West Texas A&M Thanksgiving Classic in Canyon, Texas

Notes: The Skyhawks have tested in all of their first four games this season. At 2-2 overall, FLC has trailed by at least seven points in all four of its games this season, including its 94-76 loss at home against Lubbock Christian on Saturday.

Angelo State is 6-1 overall after its 70-54 win at Texas A&M International on Monday. Angelo State has beaten four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools so far, including No. 10 Colorado School of Mines on Nov. 9.

Saturday: Women’s basketball vs. Simon Fraser at noon in Maverick Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Junction.

Men’s basketball at West Texas A&M at 4 p.m. in West Texas A&M Thanksgiving Classic in Canyon, Texas.

High school sports:

Tuesday: Bayfield girls basketball vs. Dolores at 5 p.m.

Bayfield boys basketball at Piedra Vista at 7 p.m.

Durango girls basketball at Farmington at 7 p.m.
