I am writing regarding the editorial, “Our view: Choose light” (Herald, Dec. 17). There is one point you missed: these are Gun-Free Zones – and, in some cases, gun-free countries. It is easy to attack a place where you know you will not risk your own life, because no one will shoot back.
Labeling an area this way paints a target on it. If an armed citizen, carrying for self-defense, had been present in any of these situations, I believe the outcomes would have been different – or perhaps the incidents might not have happened at all.
It would be comforting to always depend on law enforcement, but, as Australia has shown, that is not always possible. I would feel safer knowing there was a “good person with a gun” nearby.
