Election races for four of Bayfield’s town board seats ended before they began.

The town announced Friday that four candidates would be appointed by default because no other candidates filed.

A legal notice published Friday in The Durango Herald said none of the candidates had any challengers, meaning there was no need to hold a regular election. The election had been scheduled for April 7.

Bayfield’s new trustees serving four-year terms are Todd Lyon, Andrew Trujillo and Levenia Taylor. Jeremiah Aukerman was also appointed and will serve a two-year term, the notice said.

The new trustees will replace Brenna Moreland, Lori Zazzaro, Alexis Hartz and Kat Katsos. Moreland is term-limited, Katsos moved out of Bayfield, and Hartz and Zazzaro both chose not to run again, said Bayfield Town Clerk Dustin Hayden.

Hayden said the new trustees will be sworn in after April 7, and their first meeting will be April 21. In the meantime, the new trustees will receive training on their new roles, including Robert’s Rules of Order and the Colorado Open Records Act.

Hayden said the trustees serve as the board’s governing authority and are responsible for approving or denying financial statements, meeting minutes and land-use decisions forwarded by Bayfield’s Planning Commission.
