Durango Winter Sports Club (DWSC) athletes have been training and racing all season, despite the low snow year, and a few skiers came back to Durango with podiums to show from some strong performances in Aspen last weekend.
The Rocky Mountain Division U10 Alpine Championships were held in Aspen and nine Durango kids ages 7-9 competed. The championship event hosts racers from all over the state, including highly competitive teams of Vail, Aspen, Summit and Steamboat.
DWSC racer, Jett Winebarger, had a strong showing with several podium finishes among a fast field. Winebarger placed second and fourth in the giant slalom races on Saturday and third and fourth in slalom on Sunday. He also earned the top spot on the podium with a first place in the skills quest competition. Athletes have been training at Chapman and Purgatory, with specific work on skills for these events, and the team is incredibly grateful to have these well prepared training venues.
Other Durango athletes to place in the skills quest were Charlotte Venzara with a second, Tobin Safer in third, Reed Beyer in ninth, and Nina Rundquist in 10th.
Up next for the DWSC Alpine team are the U12 Championships this weekend in Powderhorn and Southern Series Champs in Taos the following weekend. U14 athletes are currently competing in their champs event.
