The debate over Colorado’s proposed fur ban shouldn’t be overshadowed by political finger-pointing (Herald, March 13). The real issue is straightforward: Animals should never have been trapped or farmed for fashion in the first place.
Foxes, minks, rabbits and other animals killed for fur are intelligent, sensitive creatures capable of feeling pain and fear. Yet they spend their entire lives confined to small wire cages or caught in steel traps before being killed so their skin can be turned into trim, hats or coats.
The good news is that the fashion world is already moving on. Designers and consumers increasingly choose innovative, animal-free materials that don’t require suffering. Banning fur sales reflects a simple truth: Compassion and progress go hand in hand.
