Authorities respond to gunshot victim south of Bayfield

Emergency crews perform life-saving efforts, request Flight for Life

Medics and law enforcement responded Thursday to a gunshot victim in the 2000 block of County Road 523, south of Bayfield.

According to scanner reports, a witness said the victim, a 69-year-old man, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his car.

The shooting was reported about noon Thursday.

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Chris Burke said a passerby began administering CPR to the victim before Upper Pine Fire Protection District personnel responded and began life-saving measures. Crews also requested a Flight for Life helicopter.

The man was taken by helicopter about 1:10 p.m. to Mercy Hospital.
