Herald’s independence worth the adjustment

Having read the recent comments and Richard Ballantine’s thoughtful response (Herald, March 29) about the new delivery system of our beloved Durango Herald, we would like to remind readers of how fortunate we are to have a local independent newspaper in Durango. Newspapers are being shut down or purchased by large corporations across our country.

We continue to enjoy first rate local news coverage, event announcements, pertinent editorials, and a voice for the people that builds and sustains a sense of community. Coming from a large metro area with what was once known as one of the best news sources in the country, now owned by corporate interest, we treasure that we have a local paper that keeps us connected to and educated about the community that we live in.

For those of us that have enjoyed a lifetime of newspapers delivered to our doorstep, it is an adjustment. Change is difficult, and while we still prefer to have the luxury of our newspaper delivered to the doorstep, we value more that the Durango Herald is making efforts to keep itself alive and vital in our town.

Bravo, Durango Herald! Bravo, Ballantine Communications! And thank you for continuing to find a way to provide us with an independent voice in Durango.
