A dark gray Toyota 4Runner jumped a median, crossed into oncoming traffic, ran over the railroad tracks and slammed into a parked vehicle before landing on its top Friday in downtown Durango.
The crash occurred at about 9:40 a.m. in the 1200 block of Camino del Rio, between the new Durango Fire Protection District station and behind The Durango Herald offices.
DPD spokeswoman Amanda Garrison said a 65-year-old Bayfield man was driving the 4Runner southbound when he lost consciousness, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
It is unknown what caused him to lose consciousness; an investigation is underway.
“He does not have any recollection of what happened before,” Garrison said. “There are no signs of intoxication, so we don’t know exactly what happened.”
Because the man may have suffered a medical event, Garrison did not provide his identity.
Both vehicles were badly damaged. The owner of the white Ford was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and the man in the 4Runner was wearing his seat belt and only sustained minor injuries, Garrison said.
Jeff Johnson, with Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, said the railroad paused operations until the tracks could be examined, but no damage was found.
