Executive experience matters in governor’s race

There’s a writer on Substack, David Thielen, who explained the upcoming June primary decision for Colorado governor this way: “This race isn’t about ideology – it’s about competence. … On paper, Michael Bennet and Phil Weiser look similar. Same party. Same broad priorities. Same talking points about affordability, housing and clean energy. The race boils down to a single question: Do you want a governor who thinks like a legislator writing ideas, or one who acts like an executive running organizations? Senator Bennet will design policies. Phil Weiser will run the state. These are not interchangeable skills.”

Bennet has spent 17 years negotiating, building networks and writing legislation. He has a strong reputation and years of seniority in Washington. But he has not run large Colorado executive agencies. Weiser has.

As attorney general, Weiser oversaw a staff of 700. More importantly, for the last eight years he has worked closely with Colorado departments overseeing health care policy, the environment, agriculture, conservation, corrections, consumer services, youth and family services, education, water resources, public health and safety.

He has clear plans for where those departments should be supported and where they need redirection. Those are exactly the skills a chief executive needs to improve, budget and streamline services offered to Coloradans.

Phil Weiser is the obvious choice to lead Colorado as its next governor. Please vote for him in the June primary.
