Local adults will their own prom – with Old Hollywood glam

Ever wanted a prom redo or just an excuse to put on fancy duds and dance the night away? Then next weekend’s Adult Prom: Old Hollywood Glam in Durango is for you. (Adobe Stock)
Get dressed up, grab a date and hit the red carpet

It’s been said that youth is wasted on the young – and if you ask us, that goes for the time-honored tradition of prom. Most of us have prom stories – good, bad and stuff that hopefully will remain in the dustbin of high school history. We got stood up. Or had a lousy date. Or didn’t go at all.

If given the chance, would you go back if you could?

For those who would – as older, (arguably) wiser adults with perhaps more refined fashion sense (again, arguably) – next weekend’s for you.

If you go

Durango’s First Annual Adult Prom: A Celebration of Old Hollywood Glam will be held June 6 at The Durango Collective, 1315 Main Ave. Those in the 21-and-older crowd are invited to put on something snazzy and head over for a night of red-carpet glam and dancing with music courtesy of DJ Vanny Vance, who will be spinning a set that will feature all kinds of dance genres, including Latin, country, West Coast swing and hip-hop, making for an all-inclusive evening.

Amber VanHoutan, one of the prom’s presenters (along with DJ Vanny Vance and in collaboration with The Durango Collective), said she’s attended adult proms and thought it would be fun to throw one in Durango. So far, there’s been a lot of interest, she said.

The evening will start with a red-carpet welcome for guests – complete with paparazzi at the beginning of the event, she said.

Once inside, prom-goers can mix and mingle and, if their outfits are snazzy enough, they may be selected by the evening’s fashion critic, who will pick the top three suits and gowns to compete for Prom King and Queen.

Because no prom is complete without photos, a photo booth will be available to capture the evening.

There are two types of tickets: general admission and VIP, which includes guaranteed seating at a table and two drink tickets.

“We’re trying to make it an immersive experience, not just like a dance where you come and show up, dance and leave,” said VanHoutan, who was born and raised in Durango.

And, she said, she had a great time at her high school prom.

“I went to my junior prom, and I went with the foreign exchange students group, which was so much fun,” she said. “That was up at Tamarron, and I just had the best time. I absolutely loved it.”

That’s the point of the adult prom, VanHoutan said: She wants to give people a chance to have a different – maybe even better – experience than they’d originally had back in the day.

“So many people that I’ve talked to about how their prom was, (they said) they had a horrible prom. There was teenage drama involved. There was this or that, or I was arguing with my boyfriend the whole time, or something,” she said. “It’s a fun way to get a redo with either a better group of people, or a better date, or not having to worry about the teenage drama and just let loose.”
