Nothing stood in the way of the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team’s attack Saturday in Alamosa.
The Skyhawks (2-1, 1-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) set team records for goals and winning margin in a 25-1 beat down of the Adams State Grizzlies (0-1, 0-1 RMAC). The Skyhawks fired 41 shots to only four by Adams State in a display of total domination.
The previous record of 24 goals in one game came a year ago in a 24-2 win at Cornell College, and FLC second-year head coach Ashley Travis admitted it was on her mind going into Saturday’s matchup.
“When I found out last year that we tied the school record (against Cornell College), but missed setting it by one goal, I was a little upset,” Travis said in a news release. “I told the girls today that if we could beat the record, we were going to do it. But we didn’t want to force anything or take bad opportunities. We were able to get everybody in the game and had a lot of different goal scorers, which boosted their confidence and our whole team’s confidence.”
FLC led 13-0 at halftime and scored 41 seconds into the second half to keep momentum going. Jazmine Palacios of Adams State would score her side’s only goal 1:40 into the second half to make it 14-1 before FLC continued to pile up goals.
Haley Dostie led FLC with four goals on five shots, all on goal. Caprietta Abbadessa, Abby Escandon, Elle Martinez and Alyssa Strough all had three goals, while Escandon also had two assists.
Liv Crawford added two goals and two assists for FLC, while Maren Clark had two goals and one assist and Kaylin Vanzant had two goals.
FLC’s three other goals came from Rebecca Kiyokawa, Ann Nelson and Autumn Rymerson. Nelson led FLC with three assists. Kiyokawa tallied 10 ground balls.
Averi Basso made one save in goal for FLC, while Louisa Sanchez made four for Adams State.
FLC will play again at 4 p.m. Thursday against Westminster College in Salt Lake City.
